Have you ever had one of those days or weeks where you just wanted to run away? If you haven’t had that yet, trust me you will someday. If you are like most people, when you do hit that wall it will dawn on you that you can’t. You have so much going on in your life that you can’t just run away from where you are. I got thinking about this a couple of weekends ago when I was on an oldies movie binge and watched “American Graffiti” and “Then Came Bronson.” American Graffiti was about one night in the lives of high school kids who, for the most part, didn’t have a clue about what they were going to do with their lives. Then Came Bronson was about a guy whose life was going nowhere, and it took watching his buddy jump off the Golden Gate Bridge to realize he needed to do something different. Bronson was lucky he apparently had no ties so he quit the job, bought the buddy’s Harley, and hit the road to find himself.
Bronson found out how “heavy” life can be at times. For a lot of life’s heaviness, there is no easy way out. The practical reason why most of us can’t run away is we have too many financial commitments, and this is something we can fix. Most people get sold the idea that you need to get a good career and work until you are 65 or 70 and then retire and live the good life. If you organize your life around that goal you may just live long enough to get there. I like this quote on the subject: “The price of anything is the amount of life you exchange for it.” – Henry David Thoreau
How about this for another way of thinking? “I can live well on $(you fill in the number) a year income so I am going to put most of my effort into creating that much passive income so I can retire sooner than 65 or 70. If you say it can’t be done you are wrong.
